Hawaiian Mo'olelo

Hanau ka Ua, the published puke (book) is the fullest record of Hawaiian rain names and their lore to date, drawing on oral tradition and literature. Rain names are precious legacy from our kupuna who were keen observers of the world around them.

"Ke aloha 'ia aku nei 'oukou a pau loa e Maui Hikina i ka ua Kea ho'onani pua o Hana, a i ho'oipo 'ia e ka ua kilihune o ka makani Ka'ilialoha o Kipahulu," aloha 'oukou a nui loa.

"Greetings are being expressed to all of you by East Maui, in the Kea rain of Hana that adorns flowers, wooed by the light kilihune rain of the Ka'ilialoha wind of Kipahulu"; much love to all of you.
